The Poway Girls Softball League 12U Gold team won the USA Softball Western National Tournament, held in Medford, OR this year. They competed against 32 other teams from California, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The Poway players went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning each of the eight games they played and scoring a total of 55 runs. Their overall season record is 38-9.
The team’s roster is Alison Newman, Allie Reese, Danica Dean, Emma Enoch, Kaitlin Surber, Mackenzie Latker, Madison Loper, Mya McGowan, Reese Catton, Sofia Carter, and Sophia Burmeister. They bonded together over their shared victories and challenges over the course of the season – including facing off against the Bonita Valley team in the semi-finals and finals, after failing to beat them previously in the season. “I have to admit we were nervous, but we dug down deep and pulled out another win,” explained Alison Newman. “To go undefeated in Nationals and claiming the title of National Champion was the biggest accomplishment I could ever ask for and to do it with my friends!”
“My most challenging game was pitching seven innings in the semi-final against Bonita Valley,” agreed Allie Reese. “It was an intense one run game, against great hitters, but we played solid defense, and I had eight strike outs, and we won 4-3!”
Many of the players have played on teams together before this season. “One of the hardest things about the season was knowing this was the last season I would play with some of my best friends,” said Sophia Burmeister. “I’m so glad we made an everlasting memory for both the league and ourselves! These are my softball sisters.”
