Music for Wildlife Conservation
Two local musicians were recently recognized for their collaboration for a cause. The Decorah Bald Eagle Violin Concerto was created with the goal of raising awareness for bald eagle conservation, named for a nest of bald eagles in Decorah, IA. The concerto was commissioned and composed for Poway Symphonette Artistic Director Ulli Reiner by Dr. Madelyn Byrne of Palomar College. “It seemed perfect to ask Dr. Byrne, a composer with a similar passion for wildlife awareness, to compose a piece that we could bring to the public through music performance,” shared Ulli. “I also wanted a slide presentation to accompany the concerto that would show the incredibly tender side of these majestic birds and how careful they are each season with their young that are born smaller than the size of their talons.”
She has performed the concerto, accompanied by the slide presentation, in San Diego with the Poway Symphonette Chamber Orchestra and on two performance tours in China. The solo was recently named a national finalist for the American Prize in Instrumental Performance 2018-2019.
