Poway High School’s (PHS) Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Next Club recently hosted their inaugural Girls in STEM Inspiration Day. The event was held in collaboration with PHS Engineering Academy, Team Spyder, and PHS National Center for Women & Technology. More than 100 girls, parents, and grandparents attended. The students took part in a hands-on engineering workshop, while their parents and grandparents attended a bias literacy workshop to learn how to advocate for their student’s STEM education.

The PHS Next club was founded by Madalyn Nguyen, Elena Tomson, and Sara Wilson in Fall 2018. In March, Co-Founder and President Madalyn traveled to St. Louis, MO to present the proposal for STEM Inspiration Day to SWE leadership. SWE awarded the Poway club a $1,000 grant to implement the project, which was spearheaded by Madalyn, Sara, Elena, Cece Gant, Lily Rueckert, and Ariana Van Dusen.
