Designed to Win

x_robotics2Meadowbrook Middle School’s robotics program has had a very successful season competing in FIRST LEGO League. Head Coaches Stacy Ganzer and Vaidehi Puntambekar oversaw a record eight robotics teams of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Individual teams are led directly by parent volunteers. The popular program combines engineering skills with its core values: gracious professionalism, teamwork, inclusion, innovation, discovery, fun, impact, and “coopertition” – competing while sharing knowledge with each other and other teams.

Every season, teams design and build a robot that can complete a series of tasks using EV3 Mindstorms programming. This season’s theme was Into Orbit, and the tasks included putting a LEGO astronaut into his space pod. The team also had to solve a physical or social problem faced during long-duration space exploration.

x_robotics3Three of Meadowbrook Middle School’s teams – Doodle Bots, Space Invaders, and Team Astro – qualified for the FIRST LEGO League Southern California Championship in December. All three teams placed in the top 20 for robot challenge points, and Team Astro and Team Space Invaders won first place in the core values category.
