Jon Canavan, Poway Fire Marshal and Deputy Chief, will present an overview of the City’s 2018 Wildfire Plan from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12, in city council chambers. Speaking at a meeting of the Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC), he will also advise what homeowners can do to protect their homes from fire damage and how to plan ahead to avoid disaster should your home be in the path of a wildfire. Canavan said he will also update the public on how the department is evolving, along with the addition of new personnel at the Poway Fire Department and Safety Services.

He has learned firsthand what Poway will need to survive a wildfire throughout his firefighting career, with a grim reminder from his deployment last year to both the Ventura Fires and Montecito Mudslides. This led to a greater focus on priorities within the fire department, especially evacuation routes due to increased traffic congestion in the San Diego area. Canavan noted he looks forward to meeting residents after the meeting.

The nonprofit PNEC works to complement the City of Poway Emergency Operations Plan through a grass-roots communication network of neighbors. For more information on PNEC, please visit www.powaynec.com.
