Bridging the Gap between People and Their Canine Companions
Shannon Anderson has over 25 years of hands-on experience handling and training animals. For 20 of those years, she worked as an animal care specialist for SeaWorld San Diego. “I trained animals for husbandry procedures (medical exams like blood samples and ultrasounds) as well as working with animals that were injured, ill, or pregnant,” recalled Shannon.
About 15 years ago, Shannon started focusing on professionally training dogs. During that time, she was a volunteer for the San Diego Sheriff Department Search and Rescue K9 Unit with her own German Shepard dog, Sage. “I am still active volunteering for the Sheriff Department helping the new handlers and their pups with general obedience training and agility work as needed,” explained Shannon.
With an exceptional resume and impressive educational background – graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in Psychology – Shannon started her own dog-training business, Total K9 Training, in 2006. “I wanted to start working with families to help bridge the gap between humans and dogs,” stated Shannon. “I am not a franchise company and pride myself on my educational background and practical life experience.”
Today, Total K9 Training works with all breeds and ages of dogs while offering private in-home training, specializing in families with children, group obedience classes, and specialized training. “I believe in blending private training with the added distraction work of group classes to help families reach their individual goals for their new puppy,” shared Shannon. “I blend positive reinforcement with balanced humane corrections to help teach the puppy what the house rules are, and I draw on several different approaches to match each client’s needs and goals.” Total K9 Training also offers certification for therapy dog work and more advanced obedience and tricks workshops. “I have trained multiple dogs that are now successful therapy dogs bringing joy to people all over San Diego,” Shannon shared.
“I believe in blending private training with the added distraction work of group classes to help families reach their individual goals for their new puppy.”
Total K9 Training has the capacity to work with families, specifically children – something that sets it apart from others in its industry. “I truly enjoy working with families with children,” said Shannon, “and I have many age-appropriate games and activities for the children to learn which helps provide appropriate interactions between the children and their new puppy.”
