Hometown Hero

The City of Poway recently unveiled a memorial statue and plaza at Lake Poway in honor of long-time resident and baseball legend Tony Gwynn. The 11-foot statue designed by Seth Vandable captures “Mr. Padre” waving to the crowd with one arm, while holding his daughter Anisha in the other. The creation of the memorial was a community effort – more than a dozen businesses donated materials, equipment, and labor, and community members raised nearly $200,000 in cash donations to cover the cost of construction. “The rest of the world knew Tony as a Hall of Fame ballplayer,” Poway Mayor Steve Vaus said. “In Poway he was so much more. This statue is a tribute to a life that, though far too short, was exceptionally well-lived.”
