Unique Experiences

student_matz2With a family who’s lived in Poway since the 1950s, Carley Matz has many reasons to love her hometown, including the fact that the area is safe and extremely family-oriented. A Poway High School junior, her favorite subjects are biology and chemistry, because the labs are interesting and because she enjoys learning about how things work. “I love how the teachers always want the students to succeed,” Carley said, “and are willing to do whatever they can to help the students.”

Inside of PHS, Carley is part of girl’s lacrosse, peer counseling, and AVID, and she is the class secretary. Outside of school she plays competitive soccer for the Del Mar Sharks, backpacks with the Poway Backpackers, and hopes to be an exchange student in Greece for two weeks this upcoming summer. “I got started in all this because I love meeting new people,” she smiled, “and being able to experience what all these unique activities have to offer me.”

Name: Carley Matz (16)
School: Poway High School
Grade: 11
Parents: Robin and Eric Matz
Siblings: Ashley (21) and Kaeley (19)
Favorite Place in 92064: Poway Lake, because my family and I have been going there ever since I was little, creating memories, which makes it have a special place in my heart.

student_matz4Carley has volunteered throughout Poway for the past four years, gaining over 1,000 hours in community service. She received the Presidential Gold Award for these service hours, and also won titles in several pageants, including Miss Junior Teen Poway and Miss Teen Poway First Princess. “These pageants have worked on improving interview skills, public speaking,” Carley explained, “and have helped me be more confident in who I am.”

Hoping to attend the University of Washington, Carley wants to major in business, because she would like to one day start her own business. “I also have a love of traveling, therefore I would like to visit as many different countries as I can.” She is grateful for the opportunity to be featured in 92064 Magazine, and cites her family as her inspiration. “My family continues to inspire me every day to be the best person I can by giving back, always being positive, and pushing me to work hard in everything I choose to do.”

An extensive involvement with her Poway community, coupled with a positive attitude and strong work ethic, makes Carley Matz an ideal 92064 Student Star.
