The Lawrences Always Return Home to Poway After Traveling
Life on the Road
Poway’s “City in the Country” vibe is a win-win for Maripat Lawrence, who grew up in Del Mar, and Brian Lawrence, who is from Texas. The pair, along with their two daughters Quinn (7) and Bryce (5), love the people, values, schools, and space that Poway has to offer. “It’s the perfect blend for a San Diego girl and a Texas guy,” said Maripat. With 92064 as a home base, the Lawrence family spends much of their time traveling.
Brian, a former Major League Baseball starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres, is still very much involved with baseball as the pitching coach of the South Bend Cubs, a Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Brian leaves San Diego every year around February or March until June, and again from August through October to coach his team. As soon as school is out in the summer, Maripat, Quinn, and Bryce fly out to meet Brian wherever he is. They attend every one of Brian’s baseball games and even travel on the road with the team. “In the school year we are a normal daytime family,” Maripat shared. “In the summer we are a baseball gypsy family, traveling around from city to city.” And they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We look at it like the experience of a lifetime.”

When the Lawrences aren’t at a baseball park, they can be found at their second home in Big Bear, on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, golfing, or being involved in the local community. Quinn, a second grader at Painted Rock Elementary, enjoys playing softball, art, riding her bike, and playing with her sister. Bryce is a kindergartener at Painted Rock and loves softball, dancing, and animals. Maripat keeps busy as a member of the Painted Rock Elementary School Foundation Board, the Poway Girls Softball League Board, and the Painted Rock PTA, as well as volunteering in her daughters’ classes on a weekly basis. Brian holds pitching lessons for local Poway Little Leaguers and plays on a men’s softball team with other Painted Rock dads in his spare time.
No matter how much time the Lawrences spend away, they love calling Poway home. “We appreciate Poway so much more because of all the places we travel,” Maripat exclaimed. “There is no other place we would want to live, and trust me, we have seen it all!”
