Bob Beavers Enjoys Serving Poway’s Special Needs Community
Supporting Special Needs
Bob Beavers moved his family to Poway in 1999 from Santa Maria and confidently admitted, “I have never regretted that decision!” Now he, his wife, and their two children all thrive because of the ample opportunities that their neighborhood provides for them. Working as a dentist during the day, in his free hours Bob is committed to numerous volunteering projects that benefit the wider community’s needs.
Bob first caught the volunteering bug in Santa Maria, when a colleague invited him to a local Kiwanis Club meeting. He remembered, “It was without a doubt the most rewarding experience, from both a professional and personal growth perspective.” That initial meeting introduced Bob to the joys of providing dental care to the less fortunate, which he continues to do to this day at a community clinic once a week. Extending his professional services to those in need resulted in Bob receiving the Business Person of the Year Award from the local Chamber of Commerce in 1998.

Now that he is in Poway, Bob is active not only with Kiwanis, but also with many other organizations that cater to the special needs community. As the father of a special needs daughter, Bob is involved with the support group PASS (Parent Advocates Seeking Solutions), has coached for Poway’s Challenged Basketball program, and devotes considerable time to the Special Olympics. Of the latter, Bob exclaimed, “Poway being a Host City for the Special Olympics World Games was absolutely tremendous. In fact, parents many times will mention that programs and volunteer groups available in other states or locations are a fraction of what we have here in Poway!”
Offering a suggestion to others who may be interested in volunteering but don’t know where to begin, Bob recommends the Kiwanis Club of Poway. He proclaimed, “It is the only club in San Diego that supports programs for elementary, middle school, high school, college, and special needs young adults.” Bob continued, “I hope to see younger generations embrace the opportunities that volunteering creates to not only benefit their communities, but to enrich themselves with activities and leadership skills that will surface. To become a participant rather than an observer is just so much fun!”
