Dreaming Big

Sixteen-year-old Calvin Raab is dedicated, passionate, and ambitious – adjectives uncommonly used to describe your average teenager. But Calvin, currently a junior at Cathedral Catholic High School, is anything but average. Inspired by the likes of Elon Musk (founder of PayPal, Hyper Loop, and Tesla Motors), Calvin dreams big and is not afraid to try for the impossible. “Musk serves as an inspiration to me because he follows his big dreams and trusts himself despite what others say,” shared Calvin.

Calvin seems to be already following Musk’s lead by creating several successful small business websites – one in particular called Raab Journal. “Through the years I’ve learned a lot about business, and I’ve applied what I’ve learned into a website called Raab Journal,” stated Calvin. “The vision is to help other young people learn about business and entrepreneurship.”

Part of Calvin’s success is undoubtedly due to his knack for leadership and passion for public speaking. “I have been involved in leadership positions most of my life,” explained Calvin. “I was vice president of student council in elementary school and in ASB in middle school.” He added, “Public speaking is something that I have always enjoyed. As far back as elementary school, I broadcasted all the morning announcements while in student council and spoke at school gatherings.”

Most recently Calvin put his public speaking skills to good use in a Speech and Debate tournament involving schools from all over Southern California. He ended up placing first in the competition – a big feat, as the win made him the first Catholic Cathedral student to win at a debate.

At school Calvin plays on the tennis team and enjoys studying Psychology, Pre-Calculus, and Computer Science. “At Cathedral there is a sense of family amongst everyone, freshman through senior and the staff members,” described Calvin. “I feel that Cathedral offers me the education and the environment to succeed.”

As for his future plans, Calvin hopes to study business at a university. “In the not-too-distant future I plan to find an internship where I can learn more about business and entrepreneurship,” noted Calvin. “I plan to continue creating websites and growing them into businesses. I also hope to travel the world, meeting new people and learning about their ideas, methods, and cultures.”
