Poway High School Wrestling Wins 40th League Championship in Undefeated Season
This year’s Poway High School (PHS) wrestling team finished the regular season undefeated in dual meets and tournament competition and topped off a phenomenal year by securing their 40th league championship. The Titans only lost four out of 126 dual meet matches. The Titans also remained within the top 10 high school wrestling programs in the nation, being ranked ninth by FLOwrestling. “Our kids have worked hard and wrestled well this season,” said Head Coach Wayne Branstetter. “We are continuing to focus on improving every day and working hard to finish strong.”
At the recent CIF state wrestling championships, the Titans once more scored big. The PHS wrestling team finished second overall as a team, and nine PHS wrestlers earned state medals with top-eight finishes. Senior Colt Doyle successfully defended the title he won last year, remaining the state champion at 160 pounds with a 12-5 victory. Ralph Tovar, another PHS senior, also won his championship with a 5-0 win in his final match, finishing the night at 43-2.
Other PHS medalists were Andrew Tausch (sixth place, 182 pounds), Brandon Kier (eighth place, 120 pounds), Chase Zollman (eighth place, 106 pounds), Chris Bailey (fourth place, 195 pounds), D.J. Garcia (seventh place, 138 pounds), Liam Sorahan (fifth place, 220 pounds), and Manny Lair (fifth place, 132 pounds).
