She’s Invincible

Alana Albertson is no stranger to receiving accolades for her writing endeavors – she has won numerous awards through Romance Writers of America over the last several years. She wasn’t prepared, however, for the incredible response to her latest novel, Invincible, before it was even published. “Invincible debuted at #1 on Amazon Movers and Shakers. The blurb [about the book] went viral, and the three top book-bloggers wrote about it,” related Alana. Invincible is a romantic thriller about a Navy SEAL who discovers a kidnapped San Diego coed and risks his life and career to save her. According to Alana, Indestructible, the sequel to Invincible, is due out in June, and she is also putting the finishing touches on a young adult novel that retells her favorite book, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Although Alana has always written, she didn’t pursue publishing until a novelist friend loved one of her manuscripts so much that she passed it along to her agent. Alana, who is a graduate of Stanford and Harvard, also runs a college admissions counseling and test preparation company, Academe Advantage, and is the president of Romance Writers of America’s Contemporary Romance Chapter. She has this advice for aspiring writers: “Study the craft, reread your favorite books and dissect them to see how they are written. Also, live life to the fullest – take interesting jobs, travel, and meet fascinating people.”

In addition to her writing and business pursuits, Alana enjoys ballroom dancing. “I am a ‘recovering’ professional ballroom dancer. When I was in college, I fell in love with San Diego when I would visit to train with my ballroom dance coaches,” stated Alana. Knowing how much she loved the San Diego lifestyle, when she and her husband, a former Marine, decided to start a family, San Diego was where they wanted to settle. “We wanted to find a family-friendly community in San Diego with great schools and parks. Our realtor showed us our home in Poway and we knew it was the place for us,” said Alana. She, her husband, and their two sons enjoy Lake Poway, going to the beach, and museums.

When she is not writing, dancing, or exploring San Diego with her family, Alana is helping dogs in need. “We founded Pugs N Roses, a dog rescue. We rescue shelter dogs – pugs and pug mixes – and adopt them out to loving homes,” explained Alana.
