An original ballet is to premier this April created by famed choreographer and dancer, Gregory Dawson. Mr. Dawson’s piece will be performed by local dancers from Southern California Ballet and opens April 6th at Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

Gregory Dawson has performed with Oakland Ballet, Berkeley Ballet Theatre and the San Francisco Opera Ballet. Mr. Dawson has been choreographing original works since 2005 for LINES Ballet and Dominican University’s LINES Ballet BFA program.

When asked to describe Mr. Dawson’s dance, Shannon Teeter, long time student of Black Mountain Dance, paused in thought, “It’s interesting. It’s all ballet technique, but he changes it into different ways of dancing that is difficult to describe.” Miss Teeter was cast in Mr. Dawson’s work along with 13 other dancers from the Black Mountain Dance studio. Also on the program, will be the classic Les Sylphides by Fokine and the whimsical Peter and the Wolf.

Black Mountain Dance, the official school of Southern California Ballet, requires each dancer to have completed a minimum of seven years of Cecchetti International exams. Their dancers range from 14 to 19 years of age and study advanced dance technique at an average of 16 hours per week.
